Considering surgery? Start with the consultation.
Start by describing what you would like to change and what you want to understand. You do not need to choose an operation from a menu before speaking with a surgeon.
Speak with the person who will treat you.
A coordinator can help with scheduling. Ask to discuss the proposed operation, alternatives and risks with the surgeon who would perform it. Confirm their name and qualifications before making a decision.
Put the full plan in writing.
Ask for a breakdown of surgery, anesthesia, facility, medication and follow-up fees. Clarify deposit and cancellation terms, including what happens if the consultation leads you to decide against surgery.
Plan the return home with the clinic.
Confirm the required local follow-up, when travel is appropriate and who will support you after returning home. Ask how complications and additional care would be handled and paid for.
